Why does Vitalab make their IVF patients wait 16-17 days past ER to do a beta hcg? A normal luteal phase is 14 days why wait another 3 days? If it is a failed cycle but the progesterone prevents bleeding then it gives the patient a lot of “false hope” that the cycle is infact a success.

I’ve read conflicting views of the do’s and taboos (e.g. exercise, sex) during the 2WW. What would you advise against, and if I’m a regular exerciser, should I cut down or cut it out during the 2ww?

There is no scientific evidence as far as this goes, but from a common sense and emotional point of view I feel that one should cut down until you have an answer as to the result being positive or negative.

Should couples abstain from intercourse during their 2ww after any treatment (while waiting for a beta) or does this only apply to IVF and if so, what is the reasoning behind abstaining?

There are no hard and fast rules regarding abstinence of intercourse during these time periods, and definitely not during intercourse or insemination cycles – in fact the more often in these cases the better. During IVF however, we prefer abstinence during the 2 weeks following the embryo transfer in order to theoretically give the attempt the best chance of success. There is however no scientific evidence that this makes any difference at all to the ultimate outcome and is possibly more psychological than scientific.
